Breaking News: HALLADAY, LEE REPORTEDLY DEALT

Dec 14, 2009

Per SI’s Jon Heyman: A three-way trade has been agreed to that would send Roy Halladay to the Phillies, Cliff Lee to the Seattle Mariners, with Toronto’s compensation unknown.

Much more on this HUGE development coming! (If Heyman’s sources are correct, this deal is monumental.)

Breaking News: Sox May Have Landed Lackey

Dec 14, 2009

AOL FanCast is reporting that the Red Sox are finalizing a physical with FA RHP John Lackey. If so, this is a huge acquisition for Boston.

This story is yet to be confirmed by any other sources and should not be taken as fact just yet. However, it does give reason for excitement is this story is proven to be true.

More on this story as it develops.

Breaking: Mets to Make Formal Offer to Bay

Dec 10, 2009

Sports Illustrated’s Jon Heyman is reporting via Twitter that the New York Mets plan on making a formal offer to Free Agent outfield Jason Bay as soon as this afternoon.

This comes as a surprise as the Mets did not seem to be in the running for Bay’s services. More on this situation as it develops.

3:54 PM UPDATE — The Mets have reportedly offered Bay four years at $65 million. Not that far off from Boston’s original offer. They’ll probably have to bump it to five years to land him.

Mike Lowell

Former Sox 3B Mike Lowell?

HOT STOVE UPDATE - 12/10 MORNING

Is the Mike Lowell era in Boston actually over? Not necessarily, according to Rangers GM Jon Daniels. “Both teams are considering it. Both are looking for alternatives,” said Daniels, according to ESPN’s Jayson Stark.

The Red Sox have acquired RHP Boof Bonser from the Minnesota Twins, who designated the righty for assignment yesterday to make room on the roster for RHP Carl Pavano.

The Red Sox have concerns about Jason Bay’s health over a multi-year deal, ESPN’s Buster Olney reports. Maybe that explains the lack of interest in Bay from a number of potential suitors.

Barry Bonds’ agent says the slugger’s career in baseball is officially over. Boo-hoo.

Roy Halladay is still in Toronto and a deal doesn’t appear imminent to get him out. Phillies GM Ruben Amaro said “a deal doesn’t appear likely.” Will the Jays hang onto the ace righty until the July non-waiver trade deadline?

Gonzalez Finishes Off a Win Sent from Heaven

Oh, what Mike Scioscia must be thinking this morning. The Angels can’t seem to buy a win against the resilient Red Sox, regular season or postseason. The dirt dogs from Boston have ended the Halos’ season three out of the last five years in the Divisional Round, and they may have set the tone for this season’s match-up as well.

Even I, from my seat in Right Field Box 86, was expecting a strike-out motion from the home plate umpire on Nick Green’s game-tying walk in the ninth. It was a Brian Fuentes fastball perfectly spotted on the lower half of the strike zone, but the baseball gods seemed to smile down on the home team, and let this one slide. Scioscia was livid, as was the entire Los Angeles of Anaheim dugout, and for good reason. It should have been a strike-out, and everyone knew it. Terry Francona knew, Green knew, Fuentes knew, and as I found out when I got home early this morning, the ESPN K-Zone knew. But alas, this is Fenway Park in the fall, and magic is in the air.

This was a statement game for the Red Sox. Kevin Youkilis was out for the second straight game with a sore back. Victor Martinez missed his second straight while attending to a personal matter in Cleveland. Jonathan Papelbon was unavailable due to lower back stiffness. Somehow, without their all-star closer and numbers three and four hitters, Boston pulled out the victory. Every position player on the roster, with the exception of Youkilis, Martinez and third catcher George Kottaras (who would have caught the tenth inning) played a role in this win. The three most pivotal at-bats, all in the bottom of the ninth inning, were executed to perfection by Boston’s three shortstops: Jed Lowrie, who had a pinch-hit single, Nick Green, who walked to force in the tying run, and Alex Gonzalez, who blooped the game-winner into shallow left-field.

The Angels had the Red Sox on the ropes. They had powerful southpaw Joe Saunders up against Boston’s weakest starter, Paul Byrd. They had leads on three seperate occasions. They had their closer on the mound with a lead in the ninth. And yet, despite all the advantages on their side, the club from the west coast couldn’t pull out the win against the mighty Red Sox. Mike Scioscia must have had a very sleepless night.

Thank You, Tedy Bruschi.

Legendary Patriots Linebacker Calls It Quits

As you all have probably heard by now, Tedy Bruschi and the New England Patriots are holding a press conference this morning to announce the veteran linebacker’s retirement from the NFL after thirteen seasons.

It goes without saying that his number 54 will someday adorn the rafters at Gillette Stadium. The most renowned, respected and beloved player in franchise history has left a mark on New England untouchable by any player that follows in his path.

It’s hard to pinpoint which moment will define Bruschi’s career. He was victorious in three Super Bowls, a participant in five. He suffered a life-threatening stroke and wreaked havoc on the football field less than a year later. To me, the defining aspect of Bruschi’s career wasn’t a singular moment at all: it was his never-ending, undying passion to do whatever it took to help the New England Patriots win football games. He was a role-player at heart, and he played his role with the greatest of energy and pride.

Did he have the swagger and star-power of Tom Brady? No. The big-play potential of Randy Moss? No. The Sportscenter-highlight-material of Ty Law? No. Tedy Bruschi never needed to. He had heart, determination, and the will to win. Put the Bradys, Bledsoes, Browns, Laws and Vinatieris aside. Tedy Bruschi is the greatest player in New England Patriots history.

Young Righty is Promoted to the Bigs

The Red Sox called up Pawtucket starter Michael Bowden to the major league roster this afternoon, as reported by the Boston Globe’s Chad Finn. It is currently unclear whose spot Bowden will take, but rumors are surrounding Jason Varitek and a possible trip to the disabled list.
