Boston Magazine’s “Best Of” editions date all the way back to 1974 and cover a wide range of topics like Arts & Entertainment, Restaurants & Food, Services, and Home Design.
They also break down their choices to showcase some of Boston’s individual neighborhoods, revealing the best restaurant, bar, shopping and diversion in each location.
What Cambridge’s Kendall Square lacks in size it makes up for in innovation, with one of the city’s highest concentrations of trendy start-ups.
So when you head in town to tackle your holiday shopping lists, consider swinging by one of these neighborhood spots for a bite to eat a cold beer, or a unique shopping experience.
Kendall Square’s Best Neighborhood Restaurant 2017
Area Four, 500 Technology Sq., Cambridge
You may be surprised to find a pizza joint as the number one restaurant pick in Kendall Square, but Area Four’s pies are not your average pizzas!
The dough is fermented for 30+ hours, then topped with hand-pulled mozzarella and a variety of delicious and unique toppings such as farm fresh eggs, marinated white anchovies, arugula, and sopressata.
Each pizza is charred to perfection, including the crowd favorite Wellfleet Cherrystone Clam & Bacon prepared with Clam Sauce, Pecorino, Hot Pepper & Parsley.
They also have some delicious “Not Pizza” options such as Foccaccia Mac n’ Cheese and Kung Pao Pork Ribs. Yelpers recommend the “Hot Mess” for brunch. It consists of two Farm Eggs, Home Fries, Bacon, Breakfast Sausage, Caramelized Onions, Cheddar, Scallions & Pickled Banana Pepper Relish served in a hot skillet and is supposedly a sure-fire cure for a Sunday morning hangover.
The chefs even bake their own pastries and extravagant desserts.
Area Four has several other locations throughout Boston, but Kendall Square is the pizzaria’s flagship shop and home base.
Kendall Square’s Best Neighborhood Bar 2017
State Park, One Kendall Sq., Cambridge
Boston Magazine chose the trendy “dive bar” State Park as their pick of cocktail hangout for 2017, but according to reviews, it could just have easily taken the title of Best Restaurant.
The menu is a bit out there with options like the Urban Lumberjack brunch special – made up of porkchop-embedded pancakes and sunny-side-up eggs and the dinner option Tabasco Honey Pickle Brined Fried Chicken with “garlicky greens” and pickles.
As for the drinks – served “all day every day” – the menu is diverse and extensive. Choose from specialty cocktails by the glass like the Paper Plane made with bourbon, amaro, aperitivo, lemon or opt for a pitcher of cocktails to share.
There’s a classic Tom Collins, a White Vermouth Mojito, a gin-based Pimm’s Cup concoction, and the Bon Echo Buck created from whiskey, bitters, lime and ginger beer.
The dimly lit bar also offers pinball machines, pool tables, shuffleboard, and live music to keep you entertained all night long.

It’s hard to say what you might find there because there is an ever-changing roster of up to 40,000 unique items for men and women at any given time.
As Boston Magazine says, “where else can you find the perfect fake mustache, Darth Vader suit, and leather bomber jacket under one roof?”
