If you are looking for a safe, quiet place to settle down and start a family, coastal New England towns are your best bet! The home security company, SafeWise has released their 2017 picks for the 30 Safest Cities to Raise a Child and our fair region dominates the list with 17 out of 30 locations.
In order to determine their choices, SafeWise looked at data from across the U.S. to figure out which cities foster the safest environments for families. They used statistics such as the number of registered sex offenders per capita and the rate of high school graduations.
The website reads:
“As you’ll see from our recommendations, the safest cities for raising families tend to skew towards coastal New England towns, where quiet, suburban neighborhoods have less crime, promote healthy and active lifestyles, and enjoy well-funded school systems.”

Nearly a third of the top cities are in Connecticut with Greenwich scoring the number one spot. The city has long been considered one of America’s safest and most affluent places to live. Greenwich offers great schools, private beaches, plenty of parks, and an island sanctuary.
The SafeWise report also noted that Greenwich is a young, family-oriented town where there are likely to be plenty of playmates for children. Eight other Connecticut cities also made the list: Fairfield, Ridgefield, Southington, Westport, Simsbury, Cheshire, Milford and Glastonbury.
Aside from #4 – Carmel, Indiana – the entire Top 5 safest cities for kids are located in New England. Maine is the only state in our neck of the woods not to score in the top 30.
Merrimack, New Hampshire was the Granite State’s sole contribution, coming in at #5 thanks to its “accessibility for commuters and rural, small-town sensibilities.”
Essex, Vermont took second place with its “award-winning schools that focus not only on graduation and college attendance but also on apprenticeship opportunities for students who want to move into business or industry-sector jobs that require technical skills.” A second Vermont city – Milton – scored the #23 spot.
Three of the cities in America’s smallest state managed to make the list: Southington, Cumberland, and Narragansett, Rhode Island nabbed numbers 18, 21, and 28 respectively.
As for Massachusetts, only two cities made the list: Franklin at #12 and Newton bringing up the rear in the 30th spot. SafeWise did note that Massachusetts is rated the highest in the nation for overall school quality and that Franklin won the seventh annual AP Honor Roll Award for superior high schools.
As for Newton, the report said:
“Nicknamed the Garden City, this suburb of Boston boasts quiet, safe neighborhoods, referred to as villages, that are accessible by rail from Beantown. Massachusetts enjoys some of the best schools in the nation, but Newton sweetens the deal with plenty of youth programs, including a popular Learn to Fish class available to both kids and adults.”
