As the train ascends the western flank of the mountain, the sweeping views and the steepness of the grade thrill riders young and old.

The Cog Railway’s track is the second steepest in the world, with an average grade of 25% and a maximum grade of 37%.

Once the train reaches the peak of Mount Washington, riders are invited to exit the coach and enjoy the remarkable views east to the Atlantic Ocean and North to Canada.

At the summit, riders can visit the Sherman Adams Visitors Center which houses an observatory and cog railway museum.

The way down is when riders really notice the steep incline of the track! But don’t worry, visitors have been safely riding the Cog Railway for nearly 150 years.
