Did you know that the iconic children’s author Theodor Seuss Geisel, aka Dr. Seuss was a native of Springfield, Massachusetts? Next Saturday, June 3 the world’s first-ever museum devoted to his magical creations will open in his hometown.
The Amazing World of Dr. Seuss Museum will make its debut with a Calvacade of Conveyances parade down Mulberry Street. The event will be massive, featuring a 75-foot Cat in the Hat balloon, an open-topped double decker bus and 1200 marching children performing music inspired by Seuss himself!
The museum was inspired by the Dr. Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Garden which opened in 2002 as part of the 7 acre Springfield museum complex. It is located in the 1920s Colonial Revival building that once served as the Connecticut Valley Historical Museum.
The museum is interactive and features two floors that trace Seuss’ childhood growing up in Springfield. The admission price gives visitors access to all of the museums, as well as the sculpture garden!
Interactive exhibits feature digital technology, 3-D sculptures, colorful murals and beloved characters like Thing 1, Thing 2 and the Cat in the Hat.
#tbt One year ago today, the top photo was posted on our Facebook to announce the official start of work on the Amazing World of Dr. Seuss Museum. Chldren can make their own Seussian artwork and their own books in an area called Cat’s Corner.
Kids will love the replica of Seuss’ childhood bedroom where they can draw on the walls using a digital drawing board. A bit different from the way Seuss once drew on his own walls, but still cool!
The second floor of the museum features actual items once owned by the iconic author, including whimsical hats and bowties, drawing boards, books, Emmys, original oil paintings, and never-before-seen drawings and sculptures.
As we get ready to kick off a Summer of Seuss, those looking to know some background on Theodor "Seuss" Geisel need look no further than the new book that just arrived in our gift shop. Written by Seuss' stepdaughter, Lark Dimond Cates, the book is about her memories of her stepfather as well as the process she went through when designing the Dr. Seuss Memorial Garden. — #Seuss #DrSeuss #book #giftshop #giftstore #sculpturegarden #sculpture #theodorgeisel #story #onsale #westernmass #springfieldma #springfieldmass #SeussinSpringfield
