The second John Hancock Tower (known by locals as the ‘Old Hancock Tower’) was built in 1947. At the time, it was the second tallest building in the city; only one foot shorter than the Custom House tower in Faneuil Hall. The building sits in the heart of the Back Bay and is distinguishable in Boston’s skyline.
The top of the Old Hancock is home to the Berkeley Weather Beacon which uses lights to alert the city of current and upcoming weather. During baseball season, it also let’s the city know if the game is rained out.
Whether you’re in town to visit or live here year round, take a minute to look up and see what’s going on on the Old Hancock Tower! We hope you learned something!
