New England Patriot tight end Rob Gronkowski broke his forearm with less than four minutes to go in the Pats 59-24 win against Indy. The Patriots have seen various key players go down this season, including tight end Aaron Hernandez. Gronkowski will be missed on a team that has a lot of depth especially when it comes to ends and receivers. It’s expected that he will be out four to six weeks. He had surgery on Monday for the break. That’s just about the rest of the entire regular season.
This is the tight end’s third season with the Patriots. In his first, Gronkowski played in 16 games, catching 10 TDs, pulling down a total of 42 passes for 545 yards. The second season, last year, was record breaking as he caught 90 passes for 1,327 yards and caught an astounding 17 touchdowns.
In nine games this season, he was on the same schedule as last year. He had caught 46 passes for 611 yards and 8 TDs. Gronk has become very popular with fans and the media. He’s got great looks, a fantastic personality and is an athletic dynamo. His connection with Tom Brady is one of the most potent in the NFL.
What Will Pats Do?
The Patriots have a wealth of receivers but they are running short on premium tight ends. However, it looks as though Hernandez will be back soon. Also the Patriots do possess a pair of veterans who can play the position—Visanthe Shiancoe and Daniel Fells. Plus Michael Hoomanawanui adds some additional depth in that spot. .
After the game, tight end Hoomanawanui said, “Rob is obviously a special player, so when he goes down, it will obviously hurt.” The teammate added, “But we have a lot of depth and a lot of guys anxious to fill in and help this team win. Hopefully we can get Aaron (Hernandez) back. We’ll just say a prayer and keep moving on.”
Hoomanawanui spoke before the extent of Gronk’s injuries were known.
New England’s in Good Shape
Gronk has been ailing this year, dealing with a hip issue. Still, he’s seen action in over 91% of the Pats’ plays this season. The good news is that the New England Patriots are first in their division with a 7-3 record while the four other teams are 4-6. The only other teams that have such a big lead are Houston, Denver and Atlanta. Despite being in very fine shape, the Pats do need to win and play strong.
