The Friendly Toast: If this is the first time you’ve heard of this Kendall Square treasure you can thank us later, and you can perk up your antenna little higher because even ABC’s “Good Morning America,” who voted the Friendly Toast the 4th best breakfast in America after a visit to their Portsmouth, NH sister spot, is hip to this joint. Critical fawnings (and there are plenty of them) and TV spots (“Man vs. Food” has also shown up) aside, the quality of the food is consistently great and the portions are substantial. Serving breakfast all day every day is an attractive option for anyone who’s ever let a late night contest on the West Coast (and perhaps a few too many adult beverages) handicap them on a weekday. The secret ingredient holding so many of the Friendly Toast’s dishes together is that friendly toast, the bread here is simply superb, thick, fresh and tasty. Additionally a full bar means that if you’re brunching you’re in proximity to a fantastically spicy Bloody Mary or Maria and if you’re having a late afternoon burrito, another dish with which their dexterity shows, you can order a draft beer from a revolving list of offerings. The funky decor is pure 70’s kitsch but you can rest assured that the food is dead serious… seriously delicious.
