The Red Sox have signed Catcher Kelly Shoppach to a one-year deal, most likely ending Jason Varitek’s playing career with the Boston Red Sox. It sure would be sad to see Tek go after all the memories he has provided for Red Sox Nation over the years. Varitek is almost 40 years old, and his production over the past few years has declined. Most diehard fans saw this coming, but it doesn’t make it any less sad. Hopefully V-Tek will remain in Boston in some sort of coaching role, as he is renowned for his baseball IQ and knowledge of hitters around the League. For many fans, he’ll go down in history as the greatest Red Sox Captain of all time, leading the team to two World Series titles including the ’04 miracle that ended the Curse of the Bambino.
Who can forget this moment when he smashed A-Rod’s face during the season altering brawl in the middle of the magical 2004 season? Varitek will go down in Boston sports lore as a hero and an icon. We’ll miss you, Tek!
