Valentine’s Day may come early for Red Sox Nation. The Red Sox are rumored to be courting veteran manager and current ESPN analyst Bobby Valentine as Terry Francona’s replacement.
It was widely believed that Boston was targeting their former 3rd Base Coach Dale Sveum for the job, but Theo Epstein hired him as the new Cubs Manager on Thursday afternoon only hours after Sveum met with the BoSox.
At first glance it might look like the Cubs pulled one over on the Sox, but did Red Sox fans really want Dale Sveum to be their next leader? After the clubhouse debacle that occurred in 2011, Boston needs someone who can come in and command respect right away in order to make serious culture changes. Sveum has zero experience as a Big League Manager, so how could he be expected to waltz in and turn the whole operation upside down? A charismatic and experienced guy like Valentine, however, could be the perfect figurehead for a New and Improved Red Sox Organization.
