Bruins Begin Weekend Showdown Against Hated Habs

The Boston Bruins take on their archival at the TD Garden Thursday and will then travel to Montreal for another showdown on Saturday. The B’s have been lagging a bit this year, so a rivalry weekend could be just what they need to kick start the engine.

Tyler Seguin has been the story of the season so far, playing above and beyond his high expectations as the 2nd overall pick in the 2010 NHL Draft. Seguin leads the Bruins with 9 points, and the Black & Gold will need him to remain in top form to defeat the enemy from up North.

New GM, New Era In Boston

The Theo Epstein era has finally ended in Boston. In steps former assistant Ben Cherington, a born & bred New Englander from a small town in New Hampshire.

Cherington interned under Red Sox GM Dan Duquette while playing college baseball at UMASS Amherst. He went on to become a Scout for the Red Sox after college and worked his way through the ranks. In 2005, Cherington was named co-GM with Jed Hoyer when Theo Epstein briefly resigned from the position. So Cherington has been biding his time ever since, and now his takeover is official. This should mark a new beginning for Boston as Beer-Gate has dominated headlines for the past few weeks. The Red Sox are expected to announce their new GM at 3 pm on Tuesday, a few hours after the Chicago Cubs announce the arrival of Epstein.

Gronk Absolved By Adult Film Star

Rob Gronkowski has been facing some heat about the way he is spending the Patriots’ Bye Week. A Media Frenzy ensued after this Photo of him with Adult Film Star Bibi Jones surfaced on Twitter.

Gronk has been ripped by local radio jocks and bloggers, and rumors spread like wildfire about his involvement with the Porn Star. But Bibi Jones herself appeared on Boston radio program Toucher and Rich on 98.5 The Sports Hub Monday morning to clear the air. Jones tells a VERY different story than the rumors being spread by most media outlets. Jones called Gronkowski a “Gentleman” and that nothing sexual transpired (she was very forthcoming about athletes she HAS slept with, but insisted Gronk was NOT one of them). She says they were introduced by mutual friends and posted the picture on Twitter as a ploy to gain more followers. Bibi Jones was extremely candid in the interview, especially about her interactions with famous athletes, so it would seem unlikely that she would lie about Gronk. You can find the full story here.

Theo Officially Hired As Cubs President

Theo Epstein resigned as Red Sox GM on Friday night, and has been officially hired as the President of Baseball Operations for the Chicago Cubs. The terms of compensation have not been fully worked out, so Epstein resigned to speed up the moving process.

The Sox will likely get several minor league players in exchange for the most accomplished executive in club history. Boston fans should be glad this ordeal is coming to a close, so the Red Sox can announce new GM Ben Cherington and start fixing up this team. Cherington should be announced on Tuesday, which is the next off day for the World Series.

Bruins Show Why They’re Defending Champs

The Bruins found their mojo on Thursday night with a 6-2 win against the previously undefeated Maple Leafs. Shawn Thorton set the tone early: brawling with Toronto’s biggest, baddest dude less than 2 minutes into the game. Thorton’s fight with Colton Orr seemed to light a fire under the slumping B’s.

Boston went on to score 6 goals tonight, finally curing their offensive ailments. Timmy Thomas was his usual fantastic self, making some wild saves while the game was still close to keep Boston on top until they pulled away for good. Zdeno Chara, Andrew Ference, Tyler Seguin and Milan Lucic all had 3 points in the much needed Bruins win. The B’s finally showed the qualities that got them a Stanley Cup last season: toughness combined with brilliant goal-tending and the ability to score in bunches. host San Jose on Saturday night before a home-and-away series with arch rival Montreal next week.

Theo Deal Finalized. Lackey Gone Too?

The Red Sox and Cubs have supposedly agreed to terms on a deal to send Boston GM Theo Epstein to Chicago after weeks of speculation and rumor. Reports say the Red Sox initially targeted Matt Garza and attempted to ship John lackey to Chi-Town too, but now it seems they will have to settle for far less. The deal allegedly includes Minor League Prospects and cash. Plus, Epstein may take a high ranking member of the Sox front office with him. It’s a shame the Red Sox couldn’t cash in on this deal and solve their biggest problems all at once: getting rid of John Lackey…and finding someone to fill his spot in the rotation. Although it didn’t work out perfectly for Boston, the organization is still making much needed progress.

Mouth breathing villain John Lackey may be headed to San Diego. Rumors indicate the Padres would make a trade for him as long as the Red Sox eat most of his contract. If they can find a compromise that dumps an acceptable amount of Lackey’s money on the Padres’ shoulders, and we get some fresh prospects from Chicago to fill our thinning Minor League system, that would be a pretty solid start to the off-season. The World Series just began, so assumed new GM Ben Cherington will have plenty of time to find another pitcher.

Specific details of the Epstein deal should be released later today, so we will have them as soon as that information comes out. Let’s pray that we also have a deal for Lackey to report sometime soon.

Bruins Win Physical Battle, But Lose Game

The Bruins lost to Carolina for the second time this season, falling 4-1 in a frustrating loss at TD Garden. The score was close for most of the contest, but penalties and sloppy Defense came back to bight the B’s in the end. Rich Peverley pulled the Bruins within 1 after his goal about halfway through the 3rd period. But the shorthanded Bruins conceded 2 Goals in the following 4 minutes to eliminate any chance for a comeback. It was a long day for the B’s. They had plenty of chances early but simply couldn’t find the back fo the net. Captain Zdeno Chara started a scrap in the 2nd to rile up the team, but Boston could not convert the added emotion into goals.

At least we got to see Chara use that long reach, throwing long punches into the faces of multiple Carolina players, even using his length to sneak in some shots over the linesman who was breaking up the scrum. It sure is fun to watch the big guy fight.

As the 3rd period wore on the B’s aggravation becoame evident. Nathan Horton was apparently harassed by Tim Gleason in such a way that prompted Horton to start a fight. But when the Bruins winger dropped his gloves, Gleason just stared at him. Horton pulled Gleason’s sweater over his head and wrangled him to the ground like a schoolyard bully. Another attempt to fire up the team that was entertaining for the fans but failed to help them get back in the game.

Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli appeared on Boston’s 98.5 The Sports Hub Wednesday morning, and said that Boston has a rep for being an emotional and physical team. He believes Carolina aimed to irritate but avoid engagement with the B’s. That certainly seemed like the case, especially with the Horton incident. Harsh calls from the refs kept the Bruins shorthanded for most of the 3rd period, but that’s no excuse for this loss. The Bruins just need to score when they get chances. Hopefully the emergence of Tyler Seguin (5 points in 6 games this year) will help to boost the B’s attack.

The Bruins host the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday night at the Garden. Claude Julien will probably put Tim Thomas back in net, which could bring some positive energy to this frustrated team. The season is still young, the the Bruins struggles are not cause for too much concern. They simply need to learn how to focus their emotions and convert all that energy into points.
