Some of you may remember the image of Joe Andruzzi running out of the tunnel wielding dual American flags before the first game after the 9/11 attacks ten years ago.Andruzzi’s brothers, who are NYC firefighters, were honored on the field that day.
It’s impossible to fully express the gratitude we all feel toward these real-life heroes, but you could tell by the crowd’s ovation that people truly, deeply care about these men who risked their lives to save our fellow Americans during one of the darkest days in our Nation’s history.
While tragic events may overshadow sport, moments like that remind us how important our traditions are. Football is a big part of American culture. Watching the NFL today, remember that this spectacle only exists here: in the greatest nation on earth. As of right now, there are no NFL franchises outside of the United States. This is a special and unique gift for us, the American people. Enjoy it. There are millions men and women in uniform both at home and abroad that risk their lives to preserve ours. Don’t ever forget about them.
