Do You Know Where The Term “Chowdahead” Comes From?

Back in the day, New England eateries would make a large batch of Clam Chowder and freeze it to preserve the seafood soup. Prior to freezing, they inserted a rope in the middle of the vat, so when it hardened they would hang the block of Chowder from the ceiling. When someone asked for Clam chowder, they could conveniently chip off a chunk from the hanging frozen block and re-heat it before serving. After awhile the block began to take on a round, head-like shape.

Today, the term is typically used for someone who has all the characteristics of a true New Englander. It is also used to describe a Diehard Boston Sports Fan.  We’re proud of the origin of our company name, and all you Chowdaheadz out there should be too!

Adios Tito

Reports are surfacing that suggest Terry Francona will not be back as the Red Sox Manager. Francona has options built into his contract for the next two seasons, but he will reportedly ask the Red Sox  not to pick them up.

Tito may still be Managing the Sox next year, but in Chicago not Boston. Rumor has it the Chicago White Sox are in hot pursuit of Francona after they sent Ozzie Guillen to the Marlins for a couple of prospects.

It’s another sad day for Red Sox Nation. Francona is the greatest Manager in Red Sox history, breaking the Curse of the Bambino in 2004 and following up with another World Series trophy in 2007. Tito was revered for his ability to connect with players and cultivate team chemistry. This season, that just didn’t seem to happen. Allegedly Francona was ready to leave the Sox before their epic collapse in September. The injection of overpaid stars (ehem, John Lackey) did not seem to agree with Francona’s style.

Good luck on your next adventure, Tito. Diehard Red Sox fans will never forget what you did for us.

It Couldn’t Have Been Any Worse

As Theo Epstein put it, you “Can’t sugarcoat this.”

Last night event’s could not have unfolded any worse. It was a perfect storm of Red Sox blunders and heroic efforts by the Rays. The Sox missed opportunity after opportunity to score due to poor base running and bad execution at the plate. Even still, they still had a 3-2 lead going into the bottom of the 9th. Jonathan Papelbon, perhaps fatigued from overuse this week, was unable to get it done. And it will be a long time before Boston fans can erase the image of Carl Crawford floundering on the grass failing to catch the sinking ball that sealed the Red Sox demise.

Just moments after Nolan Reimold strolled across homeplate to give the O’s a walk-off victory, Evan Longoria belted a line drive homer to provide the Rays with a walk-off of their own. After falling behind 7-0 the Rays rallied back against a platoon of New York pitchers, outlasting the unmotivated Yanks. The wacky evening delivered a stunning finish to the worst month in the history of the Red Sox franchise.

It wasn’t meant to be. This Red Sox team is loaded with talent but seemed to lack the chemistry of our World Series winning squads.  The loss of Clay Buchholtz in June proved to be a tremendous blow, as the Sox rotation crumbled down the stretch. Theo Epstein (should he remain in Boston, which I think he will) will have a busy off season trying to figure out what went wrong with his super team. Expect the Red Sox to target a big arm to bolster the rotation and hopefully insert some more young talent in the field.

As bad as this year finished, Boston still has the building blocks to be a World Series contender. The Red Sox are done for 2011, but they’re going to be a formidable franchise for years to come. For now, all we can do is root against the Yankees.

Heroic Lavarnway To Start, Sox Seek Starting Pitcher?

Rookie Ryan Lavarnway exploded last night hitting the first 2 Homers of his career and making a huge defensive play in the 9th to lead the Red Sox to victory. Lavarnway did more than fill in for injured Jarrod Saltalamacchia: the Rook put the team on his back. So, to the delight of Red Sox Nation, Tito Francona announced that Lavarnway will start again tonight at Catcher and bat 5th behind Adrian Gonzalez.

Hopefully Lavarnway provides the hot bat in the heart of the order the Sox need to overcome the O’s

Jon Lester will be dealing for Boston against Alfredo Simon of the Orioles. Lester will have to leave it all out there if the Red Sox want to win this insane Wild-Card Race. The Rays are sending ace David Price to battle the Yankees’ Dellin Betances, who carries a 27.00 ERA (Yes 27). Since Tampa Bay would appear to have a cake walk tonight, the Sox will probably need a Win to force a one-game playoff.

Should that scenario unfold, the Sox may have a new face on the mound tomorrow in Tampa. Rumors are swirling about the Red Sox making a last-minute move for a starting pitcher just for the one-game playoff.

Royals Lefty Bruce Chen is the name on everyone tongue. Should Boston bring in a starter like Chen, he would only be available for the one game playoff, since no players acquired after September 1 are Roster eligble for the playoffs per MLB rules. This is the wildest finish to a regular season in recent memory. Get excited, Red Sox Nation…it’s gonna be a nail-biter!

And It All Comes Down To This

After 161 Games, the Red Sox and Rays are dead even. A normal person would think the Wild Card race would have been decided by now, but we’re not normal people: we’re Red Sox fans.

If you’re a member of Red Sox Nation today should be the most exciting day of the year.

Boston has walked the line between World Series favorite and worst disappointment ever. But that’s what baseball is all about. If the team that looks best on paper automatically won every year, the Sox wouldn’t have fought tooth and nail chasing the Yankees for generations. Now, the Red Sox stand as the overpaid super team running from the pesky overachievers. If you’re a true Sox fan this shouldn’t change your mentality one bit.

Nothing comes easy in sport…that’s why we watch. It wouldn’t be very fun if the winner was decided before the season began. So while the pundits whine about the “epic collapse” I’m sitting patiently with my Sox on and my Rally Cap ready for tonight. Game 162. Win and survive another day. And should the Rays choke, a W tonight wipes the slate clean heading into October. Get excited Red Sox Nation. Days like this are what we live for.

Bruins Beat Canadiens, Look Ready To Repeat

The Bruins open the 2011-2012 regular season next Thursday, and they are coming in with morale at an all time high. It seems like yesterday they brought the Stanley Cup back to Boston, but  their quest to repeat is about to begin.

Nothing better to put the B’s on the right track than a scrappy victory in Montreal.

The Bruins edged the Candiens 2-1 on Monday night behind solid play from Tuukka Rask. All signs point to a bigger workload for Tuukka despite the legendary season from Tim Thomas last year. It is unlikely Thomas could duplicate such a performance and he’s not getting any younger so the Bruins will rely on Tuukka to start more games and keep Timmy fresh for the post-season.

2nd year prodigy Tyler Seguin scored for the second day in a row. Seguin has been showing signs of improvement this pre-season and looks to take a much larger role in the Bruins gameplan than he did last year. If Seguin steps up, he could be exactly what the  B’s need to keep the Cup in Beantown.

It’s only the Pre-Season, but there are plenty of positive vibes coming from the Black and Gold. Boston won’t have to deal with the Stanley Cup hangover if they just keep the buzz going, right?

Stay Strong Red Sox Nation

After last night’s brutal loss the Red Sox are dead even with the Rays in the Wild Card race with 2 games to play. All of Red Sox Nation is biting their nails right now, but real fans support the Sox through Thick & Thin.

I Bleed Red Through Thick & Thin

It’s a 48 hour race to the finish line that could very well end with a 1 game playoff. In the event of a play-in game Boston would have to roll out Tim Wakefield, Andrew Miller or move up Josh Beckett to pitch on short rest. Let’s hope it doesn’t come to that.

Erik Bedard faces his former team tonight in Baltimore. Hopefully Bedard is in his comfort zone at Camden Yards where he pitched four seasons of his best baseball.

The Sox need to win to get in, as any hope of coasting into the Wild Card slot has vanished. Unfortunately the Rays are playing the Yankees, so I can’t bring myself to watch that match-up because I’d feel disgusting rooting for the Yannn- I can’t even say it. All we can do is cheer for the Red Sox and say a few prayers to the baseball gods. Hang in there Red Sox Nation!
