Everyone say a quick prayer of thanks to the baseball gods.
The Red Sox avoided a sweep in Philadelphia yesterday, finally putting up some runs against the dominant Phillies pitching staff.
Team Captain Jason Varitek hit not 1, but 2 Home Runs to spark the Sox!
Jon Lester reminded us that he is one of them most talented lefties in the game, going 7 innings allowing only 2 Hits and most importantly 0 Runs.
Red Sox nation breathes a sigh of relief this morning.
Getting swept by the Phillies would have been a bitter blow to fans who had already watched the Red Sox drop 6 of 8 in National League parks. Interleague play has been cruel to Boston, but salvaging a win in Philly gives them some momentum as they head to Houston tonight to take on the Astros.
The major question now is what the lineup will be.
The Sox are in limbo right now: Youk sat yesterday with a sore foot and Papi was back on the bench after the Gonzo to Right Field experiment failed.
Also, yesterday’s release of Mike Cameron draws an even bigger question mark on the Right Field spot. It will be interesting to see what Terry Francona pencils in on his lineup card this evening.
One thing we do know is that Tim Wakefield will be on the mound, fighting for a spot in a Red Sox rotation that will be very crowded once Clay Buchholtz comes off the DL.
