Lackey Steps It Up, But Red Sox Still Fall Short

In the past week and a half,

no one has faced harsher criticism in Boston sports media than John Lackey.

Lackey’s horrendous outing against the San Diego Padres on June 22 has made him a target for everyone in town. While rain fell on Fenway, Lackey gave up 4 runs in one inning amidst wild pitches and hit batters. Lackey was booed off the mound.

But the Red Sox fans were not nearly as harsh as the pundits. Across 98.5 The Sports Hub, WEEI, and NESN Lackey was lambasted by nearly everyone. Peter Gammons leaked rumors about Tommy John Surgery and many called for his banishment to the bullpen.

This start in Philadelphia was enormously important.  John Lackey delivered; the Red Sox as a team did not. Lackey pitched very well, conceding only 2 runs in 7 2/3 innings. He even knocked in the only Red Sox run with a double in the 5th.

But somehow, during the post-game interview, the press continued to go after him. Perhaps only because crucifying this guy is the trendy thing to do these days.  And that is what irks me about Boston sports media.  People don’t seem realize that these atheletes are human beings, especially John Lackey, who is famous for being an emotional guy.

Lackey and Manager Terry Francona have been denying rumors about surgery. So when pressed with questions about Tommy John surgery after the game, it was obvious Lackey had been pushed to the limit.

“You guys are brutal,” He said.

Clearly we hold athletes to a higher standard in Boston. We have the most passionate fans in the Nation. This is the home of Champions, and we expect our athletes to play to that standard. But it’s time to cut this guy some slack. He is having a down year, sure. But He showed immense heart last night in the most high pressure start of the season.  With the criticism raining down on him just like the precipitation at Fenway during his last outing, Lackey shined.  The Red Sox offense did NOTHING to support him. He drove in the only run while only conceding two.

Moving Adrian Gonzalez to RF and allowing David Ortiz to enter the lineup did not solve the Red Sox offensive woes.  The Sox have lost 6 of 7, generating little offense during Interleague play to support the battered pitching staff.

It’s time to back off Lackey. His wife is facing a terrible  fight with breast cancer. He just came off the DL from an elbow injury which he is taking cortisone shots to battle through. Last night, he proved that he has what it takes to succeed under pressure. Right now it’s important for Red Sox Nation to get behind him so he has confidence heading into the second half of the season.

Because like it or not,we will need Lackey down the stretch in order

to have a chance at winning the World Series.

Lockout, Lockout, One In, One Out

While the NFL appears to be closing in on a new collective bargaining agreement, it looks like the NBA is nowhere close to a new deal. That’s a problem for basketball fans, since the deadline for a a new CBA is Thursday night.

The difference is, one league is the best professional sports organization on earth, and the other is…the NBA.  It’s amazing to see a “Professional” League where the best players gang up on the weaker ones like they’re on the playground-

Then celebrate their victory before they even step on the court.

The NFL has the best sports product in America and therefore the world.  I’m aware that the other “football” is technically the most popular sport internationally, but it is run by corrupt shysters and full of whining, diving and faking.  Have you ever seen an NFL lineman flail and fall to the turf faking injury to draw a penalty? No. Because the NFL is a lightening fast battle of strength, skill and toughness.  You get no sympathy from the Refs for getting knocked down.  Stay on your feet, play hard, and win.

You can’t fake football.

But basketball, like soccer, has issues.  Who can forget Derek Fisher flopping and flailing around in last year’s NBA finals as the Lakers spent the last 6 minutes of game 7 on the free throw line en route to finals victory?

Or how about Chris Bosh making a mockery of the sport with this ridiculous flop.

But the biggest issue has nothing to do with what happens on the court.

The League is poorly run, the comissioner is a clown, and the players are WAY overpaid.

The NBA is losing money.  Reports have surfaced that the Milwaukee Bucs had to borrow $55 million fom the NBA last year just to stay afloat.  Something has got to give.  Obviously the players aren’t going to say, “Hey, we make too much money, take some back so we can fix the business model.”  So, there is only one solution.  The owners will lock out the players.

Don’t count on watching basketball this year.

That is especially unfortunate for Celtics fans, because our Big 3 is old, so losing a whole year could mean the end of an era in Boston.

But don’t panic New England, because Robert Kraft is still here.  After secret (sort of) meetings last week in Massachusetts, things have been looking up in regards to NFL negotiations.

Say what you will about Roger Goodell.  Maybe he plays God when it comes to player suspensions, and maybe he is softening the game with new rules, but he turned the NFL into a $10 Billion a year business, and he seems to be doing everythign he can to make sure that business continues this season.

He and NFLPA head DeMaurice Smith were seen shaking hands yesterday as talks move forward in a positive direction.  The NFL owners may be greedy, but they aren’t stupid.  Rumor has it they stand to lose $1 billion if there is no pre-season, so the two sides are rsuhing to complete a deal by mid-July so that does not happen.

A Rookie that was drafted by an NFL team told me that sides are close and they expect a deal to be done in the next 2 weeks.  I believe it, considering the money involved and the NFL’s outstanding track record as a business over the past decade.

It’s sad that we probably won’t get to watch the Celtics this year, but it looks like we’ll at least have the Patriots.  While basketball is fun, I won’t miss watching 82 meaningless games that lead up to a 3 month playoff  TOO much…as long as I can sit on my couch every Sunday glued to my TV for 8 hours watching every second of incredible NFL action.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the Celtics, but if one of these Leagues has to disappear for a year,

I’m praying to the Sports Gods that it’s not football.

Right The Wrong: A-Gonz To RF Solves Red Sox Issues

While the Red Sox lineup has been stellar this season,

there is one spot on the field that has been lacking.

The aging and overpaid JD Drew has struggled at the plate all year, batting a lowly .232 with 4 HR and only 18 RBI.  Drew fouled a ball off his face yesterday, so he may be out of the lineup anyways due to injury.  Whether or not JD is healthy, it’s time for a drastic change in Right, at least for the next 6 games which are all in NL ballparks.

The Interleague illness plagued the Red Sox in Pittsburgh, where they dropped 2 out of 3 to the Pirates while struggling to fit both Big Papi and Adrian Gonzalez in the lineup.  Since there is no DH spot available, the only way to get David Ortiz in the game is to play him at First Base. But the only Red Sox player hitting better than Ortiz is current First Baseman Adrian Gonzalez.

Gonzo is the best hitter in the Bigs right now, batting .361 (MLB best) with 16 HR and 71 RBI (MLB best).  Before Interleague play began, Manager Terry Francona hinted he may move A-Gonz to right for some games to accommodate Ortiz.  He did not employ this strategy in Pittsburgh, and the Sox suffered.

I know what you’re thinking:

You can’t move Gonzalez to the Outfield!! He’ll Get hurt!! Our season will be over!!

Calm down.

There may be a higher risk of injury in the Outfield running in open space pulling a hamstring, maybe colliding with someone or some thing.  But there are plenty of risks playing First as well.  There are runners coming at you full speed every time a ball is put in play.  You chase foul balls toward the fence from the corner infield spot, too.

The most important thing to remember is that Gonzalez is a rational human being, and has already said he would take it easy if moved to the outfield.  He would not be diving all over the place breaking his ribs like Jacoby Ellsbury last season.

He would not be sprinting toward center challenging for balls in the gap.

He would not try to be a hero.

He knows to that his chance to be a hero comes from inside the batter’s box.

I am sick of all the panic surrounding this idea.  The Red Sox have the worst overall offensive production from the RF spot in the majors this year.   Something has got to give, because we are about to take on one of the best starting rotations ever assembled.

This Philadelphia series is the biggest Interleague showdown in the MLB this year.  While it is early, most fans believe this could be a sneak preview at the World Series match up.    We have to put our best lineup on the field.  Right now during Interleague play, our best lineup involves: Josh Reddick in Left, A-Gonz in right, and Papi at First. If we do not get Ortiz some at-bats it is going to ruin his rhythm, and we need our batting order to be on point to support our struggling rotation.  If we do not bring out the big guns in all three games, the Philly rotation will tear us apart.

Red Sox Face Off With Phillies Tonight

After a disappointing weekend in Western Pennsylvania, the Red Sox head East to Philadelphia for a highly anticipated 3 Game series. Boston went just 1-2 against the Pittsburgh Pirates, but a strong showing in Philly would put fans’ minds at ease.

The Phillies have the best record in the National League, and pre-season Vegas odds showed Boston and Philadelphia as this year’s World Series favorites.  Tonight’s match up is especially interesting, with two of the best pitchers in baseball facing off.

Josh Beckett comes in with an MLB best 1.86 ERA, while Cliff Lee has given up only 1 run in the last 33 innings.

The key to this series for the Red Sox may be Terry Francona.  The Phillies’ rotation is stacked, boasting starters such as Lee, Roy Halladay and Cole Hamels.  This means that the Sox will need everything they can get from their star studded batting order.

The problem is, Francona has struggled to integrate both Adrian Gonzalez and David Ortiz into the lineup without the DH spot due to Interleague rules.

There was speculation before Interleague play began that Gonzalez could play some innings in the outfield.  That has yet to happen, but to beat the Philadelphia rotation, the Red Sox may have to explore this option.  This solution could be even more likely now due to the Red Sox poor production from Right Fielders.  Entering today, Boston has the worst offensive output from the RF spot in the majors this season.  Shifting A-Gonz to right could kill two birds with one stone, making room for Ortiz at First and placing one of the best hitters in the League in Right.

The most highly anticipated Interleague series of the year kicks off tonight at 7:05!

Let’s Go Red Sox!
