Boston Red Sox captain Jason Varitek will return to the team for another season in 2011 by signing a one-year deal for $2 million, with another $300,000 in incentives based on playing time.
The Red Sox did not offer their long-time catcher salary arbitration, but with the loss of Victor Martinez, re-signing a catcher with an impressive pedigree like Varitek was a must for Theo Epstein. Especially in regards to having a backup and mentor for Jarrod Saltalamacchia.
Varitek will return for his 15th season with the Red Sox as the captain batted .232 last season with seven homers and 16 RBIs. He also threw out six of 32 runners who attempted to steal in 2010, a success rate of 18.7 percent.
