James Sanders AFC Defensive Player of the Week

What may come as a bit of a surprise to New England Patriots fans who watched the Patriots shellacking of the Steelers on Sunday night, James Sanders has been named AFC Defensive Player of the Week.

Although Sanders had a 32-yard interception return for a touchdown in which helped seal Sunday night’s victory, there were a few other New England players that seemed a little more worthy of the weekly honor.

Patrick Chung delivered another top-notch performance against the Steelers, finishing with a team-high 10 tackles and one pass defended, Jerod Mayo registered 9 tackles, with one for a loss, and Sanders finished with four tackles and one interception.

With a few players like Chung, Mayo, and even Mike Wright (1.5 sacks), seemingly better candidates for the award, it may have been Sander’s touchdown interception or big first quarter hit on Hines Ward (that knocked Ward out of the game) that earned him the award.
