On his 33rd birthday, Paul Pierce avoided overtime with the New York Knicks by knocking down a jumper with seconds left to give the C’s the lead and the eventual 104-101 victory.
In Boston’s fifth preseason game, referees t’ed up everyone and their mother. Refs tossed Kevin Garnett in the first half putting the Celtics in a serious disadvantage, leaving the Celtics without a legitimate defender for Amare Stoudemire.
But on his birthday, Pierce hit the game-winning shot as ‘The Truth’ didn’t want to stay on the court any longer than he had. Pierce had 20 points as Ray Allen added 24 of his own as the C’s improve to 4-1 on the preseason. Shaquille O’Neal sat out on Wednesday to rest a sore right hip.
The two teams will match up again on Saturday, playing where Allen use to play at the University of Connecticut at the XL Center in Hartford, Conn.
