In a symbolic manner, Terry Francona and the Boston Red Sox sent Daisuake Matsuzaka to the mound on Tuesday night in hopes of extending optimism around the hub. But in what turned out to be a risky roll of the Dice-man, Boston imploded as the Rays pounded the Red Sox 14-5.
David Price continues to solidify his standing in the AL Cy Young race and helped push Clay Bucchholz back another day as the Sox were ready to throw their young ace on three-days of rest, if the Sox had won Tuesday’s game.
But with the loss, Boston must come to grips with the stark reality that their season will be over once the 162 games are played. When taking a look at the end of the game, you’d think Pawtucket was playing instead of the local nine.
And that will be what fans watch for in the next month as the likes of Lars Anderson, Ryan Kalish, Josh Reddick, Jed Lowrie and Jarrod Saltalamacchia display their talents for next season.
