The Boston Bruins had hopes of stealing the game away from the Colorado Avalanche with a late surge in the final two periods, but Colombus Day belonged to the Avs as David Jones’ short-handed goal lifted the Avalanche to a 4-3 victory over the Bruins on Monday at the TD Banknorth Garden.

The Bruins pulled off an improbable comeback on Saturday night, scoring three goals in the last eight minutes before finishing off the New York Islanders in a shootout. However, the Bruins didn’t receive the same type of gift from the Avalanche this holiday.

Boston (2-3) is off to a surprisingly slow start as Tuukka Rask fell to 1-1 on the season, giving up four goals on 22 shots.  The B’s have a few days to practice before they head out to Dallas to face the Stars on Friday.
