Varitek’s Homeruns Lead Sox Past Twins

Sox Win Despite Francona & Varitek Ejections

The Boston Red Sox were riding the bat of Jason Varitek and the arm of Josh Beckett on Thursday afternoon as the Sox took the final game of their series with Minnesota by the final of 3-1.

Varitek hit two home runs for the Sox and that’s all the offense Boston would need as Beckett allowed three hits and one run through seven innings as Boston’s ace struck out eight Twins hitters.  Varitek’s two solo blasts give him ten homeruns for the season as the Boston captain hit 13 homers last season.

The Sox captain was also ejected in the seventh inning after arguing a call from home plate umpire Todd Tichenor.  Tichenor then proceeded to eject Terry Francona in the same sequence after tossing Minnesota’s catcher and manager earlier in the game.

Hideki Okajima settled the Sox down in the next inning by pitching a scoreless eighth as Jonathan Papelbon shut the door in the ninth to record his 13th save of the season.

Boston now heads north of the border as the AL leading Sox take on the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday. Boston knuckleballer Tim Wakefield takes the mound as he will square off against Toronto’s Casey.

Clay Buchholz Call-Up On The Horizon?

Red Sox Prospect Pitching Well In Minor Leagues

Clay Buchholz was the topic of trade rumors throughout the offseason and was also the topic of discussion in Spring training.  So now with the 2009 Major League Baseball season almost a quarter of the way complete, what does Buchholz’s future look like in 2009?

I don’t think anybody knows.

One thing is for certain, however, as the 24-year-old is tearing it up in Triple-A Pawtucket. The right-hander took a perfect game into the ninth inning on Monday for the PawSox.

So with the starting rotation struggling for Terry Francona and the local nine, Red Sox nation should look out for a minor league call up for the right-hander as Buchholz could be donning a Sox uniform in the near future.

Red Sox fall short against Twins

One inning changed the game when Justin Morneu hit a 3 run shot to put the Twins up 5-2.

Ellsbury extended his hitting streak to 21 games and made a dazzling catch in center.

Lester actually pitched pretty well if you take away the 3 run HR.

Twins do in Sox 5-2

Red Sox Hold On To Win At The Metrodome

Joe Mauer & Twins Cannot Complete The Comeback

Mike Lowell and the Boston Red Sox have won five of their last seven games as Brad Penny and Boston held onto a victory at the Metrodome on Memorial Day by the final score of 6-5.

Jacoby Ellsbury extended his hitting streak to 20 games as Boston pounded Francisco Liriano of the Twins early on to stake a 5-1 lead.  A late surge by Joe Mauer and the Twins wasn’t enough as Boston takes the first game of their series in Minnesota.

Full recap.

Ortiz Gets First HR of Season

The Sox brought their bats and Ortiz can sleep easier after an 8-3 victory that included HR’s by Tek (2), Ortiz, Bay, & Lowell.  Not to mention Ellsbury caught 12 fly balls tying a major league record for putouts in a 9 inning game.  Brad Penny was good going 6.2 and letting up 2ER on 9 hits.

Garnett Scheduled For Surgery Next Week

With Celtics Eliminated, KG Can Finally Have Surgery

There will be no more waiting and seeing for Kevin Garnett as the Boston Celtics were eliminated by the Orlando Magic on Sunday.

Garnett is now scheduled to have surgery sometime next week due to the C’s Game 7 loss to the Magic.  KG was waiting to see if his right knee could get healthy enough to play later on in the postseason.  However, that won’t be a problem anymore as the Celtics forward is slated to have right knee bone spur surgery.

The surgery will not require an extensive rehab for Garnett as the Celtics brass assume that their defensive centerpiece will be at full strength come October.

What Now For Boston Sports Fans?

With The C’s & B’s Now Done, What Can Boston Sports Fans Look Forward To?

The Boston Celtics and Boston Bruins sports seasons both came to a screeching halt this past week as both teams find themselves eliminate from the playoffs.  Now, with only two major Boston sports teams in action, the Boston Red Sox and New England Revolution, what can sports fans look forward to?

Well, these times certaintly would be more interesting and more exciting if the Bruins and Celtics were still fighting for their playoff lives but the fans of Boston must remember that times weren’t always this good. The Sox host the Toronto Blue Jays this week at Fenway Park as the Red Sox look to regain the AL East lead.

Terry Francona has the best bullpen in baseball and with stars like Jacoby Ellsbury, Dustin Pedroia, Kevin Youkilis, and Jason Bay all primed for great seasons, what can Red Sox fans NOT be excited about.  I mean, we haven’t even seen a single home run from David Ortiz yet this season and for everyone other than Tim Wakefield, the Sox starting rotation has been a mess.  But the local nine are 22-16 and trail the Blue Jays by 3.5 games. These summer months should be exciting as the Sox should make a push for another World Series title.

But, as we all know it, the Red Sox can’t be the only team to tide our curiosity over.  So that’s why we have the New England Patriots and the offseason’s of both the Bruins and Celtics to help us get through these tough times.

The New England Patriots have already begun their workouts as training camp looms in the distance. Questions that arise for this years squad are the health of Tom Brady, the need for a go-to running back, and the development of the defensive secondary.

For the Bruins and Celtics, fans must keep a watchful eye on the wheeling and dealing both teams do. There are going to be a lot of difficult decisions for Peter Chiarelli and Danny Ainge come this offseason in the sense of what direction both franchises choose to follow. The Bruins look to have the advantage of either team heading into the offseason and next year as the Black and Gold are young and primed to repeat as a top-seeded playoff contender.  The Celtics, however, have limited time left with Paul Pierce, Ray Allen, and Kevin Garnett.  Danny Ainge must decide whether or not to keep the likes of Glen Davis and Leon Powe around for the future or whether he should make moves immediately to help bring at least one more championship to the hub before the Big 3 leave town.

Although many hearts were recently broken from the Boston sports teams losing, sports fans can still find ways to quell their curiosity in these spring and summer months as Beantown has plenty of stories to tide us over until football season begins.

Happy sporting.

Celtics Eventually Fall In Game 7

Defending Champions Knocked Off Their Throne By Magic

A wise man once said that all good things must come to an end.  That’s exactly what happened to Paul Pierce and the Celtics on Sunday night as the defending NBA champions lost 101-82 to the Orlando Magic.

It turned out that Dwight Howard and Hedo Turkoglu were just too much for the depleted Celtics as the Magic now advance to the Eastern Conference finals to face Lebron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers.  Howard scored 12 points and had 16 rebounds for Stan Van Gundy and the Magic as Turkoglu led the offensive charge with 25 points and 12 assists.

Ray Allen finally found his shooting touch in Game 7, after having his stroke mysteriously leave him for the first six games of the series.  Allen scored 23 points as Pierce added 16 of his own but it wasn’t enough for Doc Rivers and the C’s.

Looking back on the series, the Boston Celtics should have never been able to matchup with the explosive Magic.  But through nit and grit, the C’s clawed their way to a Game 7 at the Garden before their legs ran out and the wind stopped leading their sail as the Celtics ship came to port on Sunday.

Without Kevin Garnett the Celtics were 0-2 on the season against the Magic, however, in the playoffs they were 3-4, one win away from taking on the Cleveland Cavaliers.  The Celtics couldn’t control the high-flying Magic in Game 7 as Orlando shot 66.7 percent from the field in the fourth quarter to seal the deal in Boston.

With the season now over, the Celtics will look to re-sign Glen Davis, Leon Powe, and Eddie House.  More importantly, the C’s will look to get healthy in time for the 2009-2010 campaign as the careers of Garnett, Pierce, and Allen may be soon reaching their twilights.

Thank you for a memorable season Boston, you are still champions in my book.

Sox Miss Opportunities Against Mariners

Mike Lowell & Boston May Be Sleepless After Loss In Seattle

The Boston Red Sox failed to capitalize on opportunities throughout the game, wasting Justin Masterson’s impressive outing by falling to the Seattle Mariners 3-2 in the bottom of the ninth.

A Franklin Guiterrez single drove home the winning run in the ninth to lift the Mariners over the Sox as Seattle took the rubber game of the three game series.  Full Recap.

The Bruins Are Sent Home

This is a tough one to swallow.

The Bruins had the foundation of a team that could win it all, a goalie who could carry the team, a strong defense, and scoring capabilities.  They found an opponent in Carolina who was just as determined as they were and it took a game seven with an overtime to decide it.   It was a disappointing end to a good season.  I think it brought hockey back to the hub for many fans and the foundation is laid for next season but its over for now folks and it ended a bit earlier then most would have liked. We have had championships in all our major sports except hockey. It does leave more to desire but here in Boston we want it all and we want it all right now. This time we have no choice but to wait until next year.

At least we have the Celtics & Red Sox.  We are certainly spoiled here in Boston!

The Bruins will go into hibernation until the Fall.
